I got my Bundle Monster plates, and they used three of my designs! If you'd like to see the whole collection, just click here. Here are the two with my designs - I highlighted around mine.

Candy Hearts

I entered these candy hearts before they released the Holiday set earlier this year, which has some candy hearts, so I'm not sure why they chose more. But I like them, and you can choose which to use, based on your opinion of Valentine's Day. I'll probably use both (maybe in the same manicure!), because I'm silly like that.

Candy Cane Stripes

I love this one, even if it's a bit boring - I can't draw straight lines to save my life, and just wanted some neat diagonal candy cane stripes to play with. I think this design will be pretty popular in December.

Seeing which they chose made me laugh, because they were the least exciting/creative of the ones I entered. (The others ranged from really girly to really nerdy.) But I'm just happy they chose any of them, so I can't complain. I really can't wait to use these, my own and all the rest! I would love to hear any thoughts on them, or if anyone would like to see what else I entered.
OMGWTFBBQFTW! I'm so excited, I'm mentally running circles and yelling here, interspersed with a mental happy dance. I almost never win anything, especially "official" contests like this (extra-especially anything that required work, and wasn't just a random drawing), so I'm super excited about this. I sent the max ten designs, and I don't know which one(s) they picked yet - I probably won't know until they send me the set in mid-late September. But as soon as I do, I'll post about it. I can't wait to see which of mine they chose, not to mention what the other winners designed!

It's about time I showed another of my Spectraflair frankens, isn't it? This one, I've named Boom Boom Ba, and it's made from one bottle of Essence Break Through with a tiny amount of Spectraflair and some clear polish to thin the base. It has a fairly subtle holo effect, but it's just enough to add some life and dimension. My bottle of Break Through is one of the old ones, but according to the Essence website, it should still be available in their newer Colour & Go line.

Here it is in full sun. This is two coats Boom Boom Ba, stamped using Color Club Revvvolution and Cheeky Jumbo plate D. My bottle of Revvvolution is not as holo as I'd like it to be, but I'm not sure I'd call it a dud bottle, as it's still very nice. Hopefully you can see the effect here in the stamping. This is the most true-to-color photo of the bunch, as the others pull too blue.

full spectrum lamp

Here it is under my full spectrum lamp. As you can see, the holo effect is slightly less, but still visible, especially in the bottle. Again, this is bluer than the polish is in real life.

shade

This is full shade, and the holo effect is completely dampened, but it's clearly not a plain cream polish. It has depth, but no rainbows.
Here's the song inspiration behind my franken name, complete with a video from the TV show (Dead Like Me) where I first heard and enjoyed the song:

Great song, great show.

WHY I LOVE IT: I love snow, and get tired of so many people around me complaining about the weather. China Glaze Swanky Silk. Two coats, with topcoat. This is from the Fall 2012 duochrome collection, and hopefully you can see here that it goes from a neutral, greenish-gold to a dusty rose gold, in a lovely chrome finish. This was quite pretty, but I think three coats would've been better. Formula was great, if a little thin and sheer, but application was a breeze. It was so delicate and ethereal!
This really reminded me of Black Hills Gold - they make beautiful gold jewelry with combinations of green, yellow and rose gold. I'm pretty sure there's at least one dupe floating around, but I don't own any, so no comps this time.
And because I can never leave a mani alone, I stamped over it! I used Swanky Silk's collection mate, China Glaze Deviantly Daring, and BM315 for the paisley pattern. Not my best work, but it's pretty all the same.
NYS Hot Purple + Nicole by OPI Count On Me. 2 coats NYS + 1 coat NOPI, with topcoat. Shortly after using my beloved Hot Purple for the glitter sandwich I posted last time, I found another spectacular use for it - as the base color under the beautifully iridescent Count On Me. If you look closely at the above pic, you will see prominent blue shimmer in the direct light, but you'll also notice some pink highlight to the side - both are the NOPI! I really adore duochromey shimmer polishes like this, especially when they're sheer enough to layer over darker colors that really showcase the color-shifting properties. I couldn't capture the completely pink shift on camera, but it's there irl. This really sparkles, too - I would classify the finish as micro-glass fleck, if that makes any sense. It's in a sheer, pink-tinted base, that only marginally changed the color of the base polish.

Here's a shot in full sun, just because. I wasn't counting on the NOPI being quite as sheer as it ended up, or I would have used three coats of NYS Hot Purple, or a proper underwear polish. As it was, the VNL was only apparent in full sun. Once again, I really needed to wrap the tips with every color layer, especially for photos. D'oh!

I'd like to expound a bit on how NYS Hot Purple has totally won me over on jelly finish polishes. I really dislike most jellies/sheers I've found for the following reasons: 1) they aren't supposed to be sheer, so they end up looking like the bad formula that they are, 2) they're just watered-down, washed-out versions of a color, 3) they're usually a streaky mess, 4) I'm not fond of the unintentional French mani look, 5) they'll never even get close to opaque, no matter how many coats you slather on (see the NOPI above), or 6) they're so dark that by the time they're opaque, they're also black (google Nars Zulu, for example). NYS Hot Purple, on the other hand, ticks all the right boxes for me. The rich, saturated color is outstanding, and never looks black. The squishy translucence and shine are irresistible. It's a real multi-tasker, too, looking stunning with layering (especially glitter sandwiches!) or all by itself. It's buildable to full opacity in three coats. Now I find myself seeking out sheers, but I don't think I've found any that equal this one yet, especially for the price (only $2.50, and cheaper online)! Needless to say, I'll be snapping up any more New York Summer 'Hot' polishes I find.

Jelly roll? Jelly sammich? Must have food on the brain. Specifically, grape jelly. Love my New York Summer Hot Purple! I found this beauty for $2.50 in a bin at the nail salon in my local Wal-Mart - and I'm considering going back for more! I can see myself using this color a LOT. It's the perfect shade of purple, with just enough blue and the jelly finish is just so squishy and delicious! I forgot to get pics of it alone, but I think you'll get a good idea of the color from my layering pic. Behold!

New York Summer Hot Purple layered with Colormate Glitter Glam and Confetti Tasmanian Devil, in this order: 1 coat NYS HP + 1 coat CM GG + 1 coat NYS HP + 1 coat C TD + 2 coats topcoat. Capisce? (Note to self: wrap tips on ALL color layers when applying a jelly. That's not tipwear or shrinkage you see at the free edge, it's just the translucent nature of jellies - it wasn't as noticeable IRL.) Love this combo! I used two different glitters for the layers, because after the first layer of Glitter Glam, I wasn't as fond of the all-one-size-glitter-pieces as I thought I'd be, so the Confetti gave me the smaller glitter, also. Whenever I do a jelly sandwich now, I like to do a glitter layer on top, as well as in the middle, because I think it gives it more depth.
FYI, I got Colormate Glitter Glam at Big Lots, in a three-pack (with two other great colors) for $2. If you've been meaning to try Diamond Cosmetics polishes, but haven't gotten around to an online order yet (like me), they also make Colormates. And Big Lots has been selling some awesome colors in three-packs, as well as individually (for 80¢ or $1, depending on location). Dollar Tree has also been selling some singles lately, fwiw.
And check this out: I used Elmer's glue for my basecoat, and the polish just popped right off (when I wanted it to, of course). This trick started popping up on blogs last summer, ever since Essence came out with a PVA-based basecoat that was only available in Europe. Somebody did their homework, and realized that plain old white school glue was the exact same stuff, and glitter polish removal was changed forever! I just put some glue in one of my empty bottles, brushed two coats onto clean nails, letting each dry completely (being extra careful not to get any glue on my cuticles), then went to town with my glitter. When I was ready to remove the polish, I just used an orange stick at the base of each nail, and gently worked the polish right off.
As you can see, it comes off pretty easily in a solid sheet, with little damage to the nail. I say 'little' because there is still some damage, especially near the free edge, and I have a theory about that: I think heat has something to do with the ease of removal. My nailbeds are warm enough to loosen the hold of the glue, but my free edge isn't quite warm enough for that, causing the glue to hold a little tighter - pulling up an extra layer or two of nail when the polish is pulled off. I haven't tested that theory yet, but next time, I will either remove right after a hot shower, or use a blowdryer to warm up the free edges, and see if I can't minimize the damage even further. (The other possibility is that my nails are prone to flaking, and this removal process just exacerbates that tendency.)
I'm probably weird, but I find the little nail-shaped flakes of polish fascinating. Look how pretty and translucent NYS Hot Purple is! Anybody else try the glue trick yet? I'd love to hear about your experiences, especially if you can verify (or disprove) my heat theory.
Yep. I did it. I jumped on the fuzzy nails bandwagon. But I added my own twist - glitter, of course! I was inspired by some Martha Stewart sparkly flocking powder at Michael's, but I already owned the glitter and this flocking powder was on clearance, so I mixed my own. Both the glitter and the flocking powder were by Recollections, also found at Michael's.

I shook them up together in a little zip baggie, but my teeny silicone bowl was perfect for application, because I dipped rather than the traditional shaking over the nail. I started with two coats Revlon Wind Fall, then used a slow-drying topcoat as the tacky surface for the sparkly fuzz to stick. (I swatched Wind Fall here, if you want to see it alone.) I then dipped each nail into the bowl, lightly tamped down the fuzz with my other hand, and brushed off the excess. Done! Here's a shade pic, because the glitter was easier for the camera to pick up in the shade - it just kinda twinkles out of the sea of fuzz. Anyway, this mani lasted about two days, surprisingly - including one shower and several handwashings. I removed it when it started developing bald spots. I loved it, though - so different and cute! I kept petting my nails that first day. But putting my hand in a pocket or purse sure felt odd, as the fuzz wouldn't glide smoothly like nail polish does.

China Glaze Exotic Encounters. 2 coats, no topcoat. This is a medium, very-green-leaning teal crème that can look kelly green in certain light. It's beautiful, shiny, nicely opaque and application was fuss-free. If your collection is missing a teal, I would recommend this one.

Color Club Snow-Flakes. One coat (over ChG EE) with topcoat. Snow-Flakes is your classic rich-orange-to-emerald-green flakie, just like Essie Shine of the Times or Sally Hansen Hidden Treasure.

Ulta Set the Nude. Two coats, no topcoat. This polish is kinda awesome - it's a fully opaque nude that is perfect underwear for us pale girls. It has just a touch of pink, making it very flattering, while still being a shade of pale tan that is very chic. If I had been more careful, and were applying a sheer color (instead of a clear-based glitter) one coat would've been plenty to obscure the dreaded VNL (visible nail line). It was a little thick, but not horrible - I did add some thinner for next time, though.

Also, with initial testing (literally on paper), this looks like it should be a fantastic stamping polish! I'm excited about that, because pale stamping polishes are hard to find. I got this recently from the Ulta $5 for 5 table, and it's in the oldish square bottles, with the shiny, square plastic cap - not the Pro, just regular. (Incidentally, I wish Ulta would just settle down with their bottle changes! They've changed three times in as many years, and each time the bottles get smaller, while the price stays the same. Boo!)

Sation Pyramid Princess (over Ulta StN). This is two coats, with one coat of topcoat. It's surprisingly smooth, but if you're like me and need it glass-smooth, an additional coat of topcoat would get you there. I held off because I plan to stamp over it. It applies a bit thick and gloopy, but the coverage is great, and a little thinner helped with the gloopiness. It's incredibly complex for a mainstream glitter, so I'll list what I can see. As far as I can tell, it contains several sizes of hex glitter, like so: small (almost micro) gold and silver, slightly larger silver, medium black, largish blue, largish pink holographic and largish iridescent all in roughly equal proportions. The overall effect is a lovely speckled disco ball, really blingy. See the reflection on my ring finger bouncing off my pinkie nail? It's super-sparkly, even in low light.
I'm so excited to see that our area TJ Maxx's and Marshall's have finally started getting a trickle of Sations! I've been keeping an eye out for weeks now, since seeing the first blog posts about them. About two weeks ago, I found the same lone pastel pink at 3 or 4 different locations. Now, I'm seeing a handful of creams at a few locations, and this one orphaned in one. Being the first glitter Sation I've found so far, naturally I snatched it up in my greedy little paws! If this is representative of the collection, I can't wait to see the full displays!
Aaand one last shot, because after years of practice and a few different cameras, I've come to the inescapable conclusion that I really suck at capturing glitter in pictures. So, Quantity over Quality, folks! Hopefully my description somewhat makes up for my lack of camera skillz. So, late to the party again, but this time I have an almost legitimate reason. My swatches came out carp. I tried to do everything right, like using cuticle oil to help my manky cuticles and applying extra-carefully. The sun even cooperated! Everything was great, but when I went to edit the photos, almost every one was completely inaccurate to my eye. Clearly I need to play with my camera settings some more, because most of the colors were distorted and washed out in direct sunlight.

I was too <strike>lazy</strike> disheartened by my fail to take fresh swatches, so I'm substituting my less-exciting-but-more-color-accurate nail wheel swatches this time. Don't worry, I'm sure these will make an on-nail appearance at some point, because they're great colors.

Bonus stamping pic of I'm Not Lion. This reached whole new levels of awesome! I loved that the stamp was just transparent enough to still sparkle through. I stamped with Pure Ice All Night Long and BM319.
PS: Pardon my playing around with my watermark, just trying to figure out the best placement. For this look, I started with a base of Sally Hansen Lavender Cloud, then sponged Sinful Innocent and Rimmel Rags to Riches on the tips. The flowers are stamped with American Apparel L'Esprit, Ulta Celebutante and Hot Topic Bright Lavender, with my Essence stamping plate. Then I mattified it.
This is one of my favorite designs I've done in a long time. I love the textured look of the grass and the depth added by using three different purples for stamping.
Sinful Neptune, two coats with topcoat. Beautiful slightly dusty medium blue with copious opalescent shimmer, giving it an awesome speckled look. This came out recently, in the Cast Away collection, which snuck into drugstores just after Walgreens' 99¢ sale, of course. But still, it's totally worth $1.99 (normal Sinful price), so I snagged it anyway.
L'Oreal Pink Shells, two coats. Nice, glowy fuchsia jelly with hot pink glass fleck. These pics are from last summer, so I don't remember much about application or wear, but I do remember that it bubbled on me. I don't have many L'Oreal polishes, because they don't seem very exciting or unique, including this one. I'm a sucker for glass flecks and glowy polishes, though, and I must've gotten a really good deal on it, otherwise I probably would've skipped it.
Anybody else ready for spring? As soon as I had Orly Fresh on my tips, I knew it needed some flower action. So, I got out my dotting tool and added some! The pink is Sinful Daredevil, the white is Wet n Wild French White Crème, the orange is an unnamed neon Pumpkin polish and the yellow centers are China Glaze Sunshine Pop.

Here's the very aptly named Orly Fresh on its own, two coats. Lovely jellyish green crème, close to neon but not quite there. I don't use Orly very often, but every time I do, I can't help but think I should use them more often! Formula is awesome and I had almost no clean-up, which is nearly unheard-of for me. Why don't I have and use more Orly's?

I wandered into Justice for the first time today, to see if they had nail polish. The saleslady approached and asked what I was looking for, and when I told her, she said "Oh, we just got some magnetic polishes - they're still in the back, let me go get them!" Yay! She brings them out and tells me that they hadn't figured out how they work yet, so I happily demo'd them for the staff, mostly through the glass bottle (yep, this works, just hold the magnet against the glass for a few seconds and you'll get the design inside the bottle).

From what I found, these come in five colors and have two designs - star and stripes. I'm really excited to find the star design, because I haven't seen the China Glazes locally and it seems like the trend for this era of magnetic polish is mostly stripes or waves. These have removable caps, and the magnet covers the entire top, with magnets strong enough to pull the designs quickly. Minor complaints include: these don't have that nifty little ledge to rest against your cuticle like some others, no markings on the magnet to show orientation of the design and the small bottles (only 0.25 oz). Oh, and a pet peeve: no names on the polishes. Boo!

Not the best swatches, because I'm still at the bottom of the learning curve for magnetics, but these should give you an idea of color. My favorite is the burgundy one, 2nd from the right. It's hard to see in my photo, but it has red glitter! So pretty! They're all nice, and I don't think there's any dupes to other brands, as far as I know. Definitely worth hunting down, if you can. Bonus: today everything in the store was 40% off! Happy hunting!

Are you excited about the magnetic trend?

It's not uncommon for me to get bored with a mani quickly, but I'm too lazy to remove it and it still looks okay, so I just add something. Yes, I confess to polish ADD. This time it turned out alright, if <strike>a bit</strike> thick. Here's the final manicure after about 5 days. This shows the stamping, using plates BM03 and fauxnad M96. Back to the beginning, this is two coats China Glaze Flip Flop Fantasy alone. It's a typical neon, so it dries matte, and I liked it that way. It's so bright! Love this one.
And with topcoat, as it normally looks on me. I love wearing mood polishes when my nails are long like this. Instant funky french! This is a great color combo, too. The yellow is one of those rare shades that looks great with my skintone, and the peach is equally flattering.
My husband came up with this stamping idea - he wanted something that was reminiscent of flames, and used the mood polish to its full potential. I used China Glaze Foxy and BM212. It looked much cooler in real life, with the mood polish changing color, and my stamping mistakes not so noticeable.
Sephora by OPI Run With It, 2 coats with topcoat. I remember really lemming this polish, then being a bit disappointed by it. It kinda gives me corpse hands, and the shimmer is not nearly as visible on the nail as it is in the bottle, but it does have a sort of textured look to it. It certainly isn't flat or chalky, it's just a bit blah on me, kinda like Minnesota weather in February.
And a coat of OPI Turquoise Shatter livens it up! I loved this because it makes me think of water washing over a white sand beach. What I wouldn't give to see that in person right now!
